Another origin of 二百五 in the sense of half-wit: in the ancient Chinese treasury, silver ingots were packed with thick papers for depository. Officially they put 500 taels of silver ingots in one pack -“一封”. so 250 are half a pack -“半封”, which sounds the same with "半疯"-lunatic.
