Chinese waiting for evacuation in Central Africa

Central African Republic President Francois Bozize has fled the presidential palace in the capital Bangui. He escaped 30 minutes before rebel fighting erupted around the compound.

The Presidency announced Bozize’s flight after a local human rights group reported he was seen en route to the city of Mbaiki, 107 kilometers south of the capital.

The announcement came amid fierce fighting around the presidential palace, which has been reportedly seized by the Seleka rebel coalition. About forty Chinese are waiting at the airport for evacuation.

China’s ambassador to the Central African Republic said there are still around ten Chinese voluntarily staying in the country. The Chinese embassy says it will make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals.
