Japan-made F-35 parts export to be exception to arms embargo

The government has decided to allow export of parts manufactured by Japanese firms for the U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jet as an exception to Japan's long-standing ban on weapons exports, sources close to the matter said Monday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga is expected to endorse parts exports to third countries in a statement shortly, despite concerns that the use of Japanese parts for the jets might conflict with the nation's policy of avoiding any possible aggravation of international conflicts.

Such concerns have been fueled as Israel is on the list of countries expected to acquire the F-35s. Military tensions between the Middle East country and its neighbors are currently heightened.
