China Not to Face Philippines before UN Tribunal

China Not to Face Philippines before UN Tribunal

The Chinese government has defended its refusal to face the Philippines before a United Nations tribunal.

They maintain the UN shouldn't have been involved in the territorial dispute between the two countries over the South China Sea.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said the Phillippine decision went against consensus.

"Philippines' decision to take its territorial disputes in the South China Sea with China to a U.N. tribunal goes against our consensus, and the Chinese side rejects it."

The consensus he mentioned was the agreement between China and the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations, to solve disputes through direct negotiations.

His comments were in response to those of Ed Royce's, who's the chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee.

He said China should face the Phillippines before the tribunal to avoid regional unrest and economic turmoil.
