Pentagon removes ban on women serving in combat

Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is expected to remove the ban on women serving in combat, AP reports citing a senior defense official on Wednesday.

The removal of the 1994 rule gives female troops the prospect of frontline positions and potentially elite commando jobs, after more than a decade of war.

Panetta's decision has given the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.
