Japanese militarization and rightist deviation jitter world

Wall Street Journal punished two articles on Japanese militarization and rightist deviation on January 10.

In an article entitled as “Tokyo moves to build up Japan's defenses”, it analyzed that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abehas started taking steps to build up the nation's defense and diplomatic position to counter China's rise-a move that could add to tensions between the two.

As the first move toward fulfilling the ruling party's campaign promise to expand Japan's defense capability, Tokyo plans to use its emergency economic stimulus package for a range of military equipment, from a new Patriot-missile defense system to Chinook helicopters, a defense ministry spokesman said.

The ministry has requested ¥180.5 billion (US$2.1 billion) to be included in the new government's ¥10.3 trillion stimulus package, expected to be approved early next week.

In addition to spending stimulus money on weapons, Japan is considering increasing its defense spending for the next fiscal year for the first time in a decade.

In another article published same day, Japan policy chief calls for reconsideration of war apology, it reported that Sanae Takaichi, 51, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party's powerful policy research council, said Mr. Abe should issue a new statement that backtracks on some of Japan's previous apologies for wartime actions and "protects the honor and pride" of the nation.
