Strained China-Japan ties impact Japanese car sales in China

A diplomatic row between Japan and China is having "some impact" on Japanese car sales in China, a Nissan Motor Co Ltd executive said on Thursday, a sign the dispute is affecting business between the world's second- and third-largest economies.

“Overall, not only for Nissan but also all Japanese makers, we have been hit by a drop in sales, especially August sales. That means there is some impact,” Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga told reporters on the sidelines of an auto conference. “It is very difficult to conduct big sales promotional campaigns, especially promotional events outdoors.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei responded to a reporter's question about "declined Japanese car sales in the Chinese market ".

"As we all know, China-Japan relationship has been disrupted seriously," said Hong, "to improve the China-Japan relationship, the key is that Japan should take the initiative to stop activities harming the Chinese sovereignty."
