Smartphones to Surpass PCs

The amount of smartphone shipments worldwide will likely surpass that of personal computers this year for the first time, according to market researcher Gartner on Monday. Smartphone shipments are expected to reach $239.6 billion, exceeding PCs’ $218.6 billion.

Last year, smartphone shipments amounted to $204.5 billion, or $22.9 billion lower than the $227.4 billion for PCs.

The report forecast that smartphone shipments will rise 17.2 percent from last year while PC shipments will fall 3.9 percent.

Based on number of units shipped, smartphones already surpassed PCs in 2011.

Smartphone shipments will reach 860 million units, while demand for PCs will wane to 354 million units. Shipments of tablet PCs will jump to 180 million units from 64 million units in 2011, the report added.
