China levies MFN import tariff upon New Zealand dairy products

By Xiong Yuqing, Sina English

China levies import tariffs by Most Favored Nation Rates for New Zealand dairy products from Jan 29, according to General Administration of Customs (GAC) website.

GAC released the announcement on Jan 28 that China will implement special protective measures for agriculture products originally produced in New Zealand under 11 types of duties.

By Jan 28, some dairy products (tariff codes 04021000, 04022100, 04022900 and 04029100) had reached 7,5367.401 tonnes, which exceeded the trigger standard for special protective measures in 2013. As a result, products mentioned above will have to pay the import tariff from Jan 29.

According to General Agreement of Tariff and Trade (GATT), WTO members may take a safeguard action to protect a specific domestic industry from an increase in imports of any product which is causing, or which is threatening to cause, serious injury to the domestic industry that produces like or directly competitive products.
