China unveils one-time purchase of 9 mega surveillance ships

By Wang Yang, Sina English

The Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited has recently signed a 250 million yuan worth of sales contract in Beijing which involves the purchase of 9 law enforcement vessels by the government, including five 3,000-ton-class vessels and another four 5,000-ton-class ones.

Delivered by the company back in 2010, the “Surveillance No. 50” ship, the flagship of the newly ordered vessels, has become the largest of the kind currently in service with its impeccable tonnage, most powerful comprehensive capabilities and higest technological content, which has been dispatched to conduct law enforcement patrolling the territorial waters off China's Diaoyu Islands.

Once built and delivered, the 9 vessels will be sent to patrol the waters under China's jurisdiction, mainly around the continent shelf and the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), to safeguard China’s maritime rights.
