S.Sudan troops withdraw from border area

South Sudan started withdrawing its army on Thursday from the border with Sudan to set up a demilitarized buffer zone as part of a peace deal that stipulated both must pull back troops before oil exports can restart.

The pullout would be completed by February 4 and South Sudan expected Sudan to do the same, the government said in a statement.

Sudanese officials could not be reached for comment.

The troop pullout is key provision for resuming crude exports from South Sudan because the oil pipeline runs through the territory of its northern neighbor.
