Skype Next in China Internet Witchhunt?

Skype Next in China Internet Witchhunt?

First Facebook, then Twitter, then Google almost got blocked now it looks like Skype is next in China’s methodical thrust to protect national internet industries and annoy everyone in the universe.

A Dec 30 report in Shanghai Daily reported that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology deemed all Internet phone services illegal except those run by China Telecom and China Unicom.

Even Xinhua admitted that the decision had nothing to do with legality and everything to do with protecting state-owned carriers.

This is especially bad news for expats as many of us rely on Skype to keep in contact with people back home cheaply.

There is no indication when the ruling will come into effect and there is some doubt whether it will affect computer to computer calls. I made domestic China Skype calls yesterday without any problem.

Hopefully it'll turn into just another scare story, but regardless, it’s all silly. WTO, where the hell are you? Sleeping off the New Year hangover? How can any of this crap possibly be legal?
